Oregon Trip Part IV

One of the big highlights of our camping trip on the coast was catching a crab. My brother-in-law borrowed a crab trap from a friend and taught the kids how to lure in an elusive crab.

The kids loved the docks and could hardly wait to learn how to catch a crab.

First, he showed us how to attach some bait (a chicken leg) to the inside of the trap.

Next, throw it into the water, attach the rope to the dock, and wait...

We did some other fun activities and then came back and checked the trap. The first time we checked, we caught a glimpse of a few small crabs, but they easily slipped through the trap and back into the water.

But, the second time they checked, voila! Two crabs!! One was a female, which they had to throw back, but the other was a male.

A quick measurement to verify that he was legal size and the celebrating began!

The kids were pretty proud of themselves.

Next, we learned the art of cooking a crab...also very entertaining, but soon we could smell crab meat and then ...

a gourmet crab was ready to eat. We melted a little butter,

and learned the technique of getting to the meat. Our daughter was the only one who liked the taste of it, but all the boys agreed that they would catch the crabs and she could cook and eat them. We will remember our day spent crab catching for a long time!!
